Scholars and experts in biological technologies from the US, Australia, New Zealand, South Korea, Singapore, India and China are attending the three-day Bioscience Asia 2002 forum in Taipei, which runs through tomorrow. The forum is jointly sponsored by the Academia Sinica and Hewlett-Packard Co, a leader in bio-computing.
A spokesman of the Academia Sinica said yesterday that in recent years, biotechnology has become one of the most important branches in science and technological development around the globe. The government and industry in Taiwan are expected to invest NT$30 billion in this sector in the next three years.
The sponsors have invited renowned international scholars to introduce new developments in biotechnologies as well as genetic engineering.
Among the speakers during the three-day meeting are Professor Li Wen-hsiung (李文雄) of the University of Chicago, Professor Peter Hunter of the University of Auckland and Professor John Mattick of the University of Queensland.
