Formosa Plastic Corp (台塑) and Fujitsu Hitachi Plasma Display (FHP) of Japan said yesterday they had agreed to jointly produce advanced flat television screens. The pair hope the Taiwan-based project will form the world's largest maker of high-end plasma display panels, Formosa Plastics spokesman Huang Tsung-chin (黃宗敬) said. Under the deal, Formosa will take a 77.5 percent stake in the company, to be called Formosa Plasma Display Corp (台朔光電), with FHP holding 22.5 percent. The joint venture, capitalized at NT$2.8 billion (US$80 million), was expected to begin mass production in April next year. Some NT$4.7 billion would be invested in the first phase of operation and NT$1.6 billion more would be injected two years after mass production starts. FHP, a 50-50 joint venture between Japanese electronics giants Fujitsu and Hitachi, has said its unit Kyushu FHP would sell part of its plasma display production facilities to the new firm and provide technology support.

The High Court yesterday overturned a Taipei District Court decision to release Taiwan People’s Party Chairman Ko Wen-je (柯文哲) and sent the case back to the lower court. The Taipei District Prosecutors’ Office on Saturday questioned Ko amid a probe into alleged corruption involving the Core Pacific City development project during his time as Taipei mayor.
