The TAIEX gained 48.81, or 0.9 percent, to 5600.55, its highest since April 19. Within the index, 369 stocks rose and 130 fell.
"I guess the index will rise again this year. Confidence is very strong," said William Cheng, who helps manage NT$3 billion in Taiwan stocks at Zurich Securities Investment Trust Co in Taipei. "The economy is recovering and electronic orders are increasing" for the nation's manufacturers.
Cheng is buying memory chipmakers such as Winbond Electronics Corp (華邦電子) and Powerchip Semiconductor Corp (力晶半導體).
The total value of trade today was NT$166.4 billion, the biggest trading day since Dec. 13.
Asustek rose NT$10, or 6.5 percent, to NT$163, its biggest gain since Nov. 23. Taiwan's largest maker of computer motherboards said it plans to raise output by at least a fifth this year as customers such as Hewlett-Packard Co and Sony Corp place more orders. Sales at Asustek grew 18 percent from 2000 to NT$84 billion last year, said Deputy Director of Finance David Chang.
Some memory chipmakers gained. The 128-megabit DRAM chip rose to US$2.36 on Monday, an 8.3 percent increase from Friday, according to DRAM Exchange, a marketplace for memory chips. The price of 128-megabit DRAMs has more than doubled from its low on Nov. 6 last year.
Mosel Vitelic Inc (茂矽電子) rose 80 cents to NT$17.80. Powerchip rose NT$1.60 to NT$24.60.

As of 1pm, the storm was about 1,070km southeast of Oluanpi (鵝鑾鼻), Taiwan’s southernmost point, and was moving west-northwest at 28 to 32kph, according to CWA data.
