A cold surge advisory has been issued for 17 of 22 counties and cities in Taiwan, with those areas set to see temperatures fall to as low as 10°C today, the Central Weather Administration (CWA) said yesterday.
The cold weather is forecast in the wake of a strong continental cold air mass, combined with radiative cooling effects, CWA forecaster Lai Hsin-kuo (賴欣國) said.
An "orange" cold surge alert has been issued for New Taipei City, Taipei and Taoyuan, as well as Hsinchu, Miaoli and Yilan counties in the north, indicating a minimum ground-level temperature of below 6°C or a minimum ground-level temperature of below 10°C and temperatures below 12°C for 24 hours.

Daytime mercury is forecast to hit 15°C in the north and 18°C to 20°C in central and southern Taiwan today, the CWA said.
The cold air mass is expected to weaken tomorrow and on Saturday with temperatures expected to rise to 18°C to 20°C in the north, and 20°C to 22°C in central and southern Taiwan, Lai said.
Another continental cold air mass is forecast to set in from Saturday night to Monday, with temperatures plunging to 13°C to 15°C in the early mornings and at night, but the weather would remain dry, he added.

The military yesterday said it has located the flight data recorder, or black box, of an F-16V jet that disappeared off eastern Taiwan earlier this month, and it would soon deploy a salvage team to try to retrieve it. Air Force Command Headquarters said that while it had pinned down the location of the black box, it was still searching for the aircraft’s sole pilot, air force Captain Hsin Po-yi (辛柏毅). Without providing details, the air force said it had located the black box days after detecting some intermittent signals and would now engage a team of professionals to retrieve it. The air
