Echoing the UN’s SDG Target 3.6 to halve the number of deaths and injuries from road traffic accidents, foodpanda is actively taking part in the Ministry of Transportation and Communication traffic safety month initiative that encourages riders to yield to pedestrians. foodpanda has launched “Safe Delivery 333” program to ensure road safety, during and after a delivery mission. The 360 Safe Plan program has helped reduce the number of road traffic accidents during May 2022 by 30% year-on-year and the number of people charged with severe traffic violations by 24% year-on-year. foodpanda has further extended its reach, benefiting 102% more delivery partners compared to 2021. This year, foodpanda has continued to expand related measures including bonuses that reward commitments to road traffic safety, a first for the industry, that have led to the halving of monthly accident rate compared to a year ago; the provision of equipment and accessories for the rainy season to improve road traffic safety; deploying intelligent solutions through the system for risk reduction; collaborations with central and local government traffic authorities to promote safer riding habits including yielding to pedestrians, giving way at intersections, and being more mindful of blind spots.
foodpanda Operations Director Anson Chin shared, “Our ‘Safe Delivery 333’ program represents foodpanda’s actions from past, present to the future! Since 2020, our ‘360 Safe Plan’ has continued to see refinement to achieve current results. We are delighted to announce that 3 initiatives will continue to focus on building a safer delivery network for all road users.”
foodpanda expands “360 Safe Plan” to comprehensively protect riders with NT$120 million in annual funding and three key performances
With more than 10,000 riders choosing to start a new chapter in their lives with foodpanda, foodpanda has launched the “360 Safe Plan” to ensure the safety of its riders before, during and after.
Before a delivery: foodpanda has invested more than NT$100 million to take out group accidental personal insurance providing insurance protection of up to NT$3 million; other measures include training and testing on occupational safety, food and road safety; as well as providing a one-stop shop for riders to procure more than 20 types of safety equipment to accommodate all weather conditions.
During a delivery: foodpanda’s highly optimized AI-powered algorithm dispatches delivery orders and recommends the best routes for our delivery partners; foodpanda has also partnered with weather forecasting companies to provide timely weather alerts, while abiding by local governments’ orders to suspend deliveries or shortening the delivery radius during inclement weather, placing the safety of all riders first.
After a delivery: 4 training courses and 3 rider benefits.
Since 2019, foodpanda has been working with central and local transportation authorities and the Hsinchu Safety-Educational Center in organizing more than 128 session and 6 rounds of scooter safety courses for riders across 17 cities; working with the Directorate General of Highways (DGH), foodpanda reviews its roster of riders to identify those who have been involved with serious traffic violations as well as others whose prior training has lapsed by one year for retraining. foodpanda also found that compared to commuters, riders on average spend around 250% more time on the road. Statistics from the DGH show that new riders who have just received their license within a year accounted for 10 percent of all motorcycle accidents in 2022. To ensure the safety of newer riders, foodpanda has launched a rookie riders program that has made 3 rounds across Taiwan totaling 108 sessions. foodpanda also leverages its digital channels to dispatch more than 6 million road safety reminders and messages on a monthly and semi weekly basis.
Apart from traffic safety, foodpanda since 2022 has been offering financial aid for riders, including the provision of relief payments and scholarships for more than 1,000 families in need; regarding healthcare, foodpanda has held 12 rounds of complementary health examinations for over 2,300 riders; on amenities, foodpanda has established agreements with a network of 3,000 merchants to provide free drinking water, restrooms, device charging and discounts for riders. foodpanda is also working with large enterprises to provide discounts on vehicle purchases and mobile service plans.
Cumulatively, foodpanda has invested more than NT$360 million in funding to the “360 Safe Plan” to elevate road safety and rider care, which has resulted in a dramatic decline in road accidents during delivery. During May 2023, the number of road traffic incidents saw a 30% annual decline, with the number of road traffic violations also dropping by 24% annually; concurrently, the number of riders that have benefited from foodpanda’s initiatives has risen by 102%, a testament to foodpanda’s dedication to elevating road safety training and rider care.
foodpanda launches 3 major initiatives to further lower road traffic risks!
According to the WHO, in 2022, more than 1.3 million lives were lost globally due to road traffic accidents. On this issue, having identified risk factors affecting road traffic safety as including driver behavior, road conditions and vehicle types, foodpanda has accordingly launched a program focusing on:
Safety Bonus: foodpanda in May 2023 began providing a NT$5 bonus for each order to promote road safety and compliance with traffic regulations; since then, the number of traffic accidents that occurred after June 2023 has been halved compared to the same period in 2021.
Elevating safeguards: After cross-referencing data for climate patterns and delivery-related accidents in Taiwan for each month of 2021 and 2022, foodpanda has identified a higher incidence of accidents during the rainy season, specifically from May to August. foodpanda finds that road safety can be improved if riders are provided with equipment including water repellent helmet visors, tire pressure sensors, motorcycle cameras, high-visibility rain gear and Bluetooth headsets.
Intelligent preventative solutions: foodpanda continues to enhance its delivery system by utilizing system algorithms to estimate the quantity of items in each order and assess the efficiency of safe delivery. foodpanda intelligently split orders and automatically assign them to different riders to ensure safe transportation.
foodpanda is actively promoting road safety by developing a diverse range of safety initiatives to protect our riders and collaborating with central and local traffic authorities to advocate for road safety. In the future, foodpanda will continue to expand our road safety and rider care programs, ensuring our commitment to build a safer delivery network for all road users.
Four factors led to the declaration of a typhoon day and the cancelation of classes yesterday, Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an (蔣萬安) said. Work and classes were canceled across Taiwan yesterday as Typhoon Krathon was forecast to make landfall in the southern part of the country. However, northern Taiwan had only heavy winds during the day and rain in the evening, leading some to criticize the cancelation. Speaking at a Taipei City Council meeting yesterday, Chiang said the decision was made due to the possibility of landslides and other problems in mountainous areas, the need to avoid a potentially dangerous commute for those
There are 77 incidents of Taiwanese travelers going missing in China between January last year and last month, the Straits Exchange Foundation (SEF) said. More than 40 remain unreachable, SEF Secretary-General Luo Wen-jia (羅文嘉) said on Friday. Most of the reachable people in the more than 30 other incidents were allegedly involved in fraud, while some had disappeared for personal reasons, Luo said. One of these people is Kuo Yu-hsuan (郭宇軒), a 22-year-old Taiwanese man from Kaohsiung who went missing while visiting China in August. China’s Taiwan Affairs Office last month said in a news statement that he was under investigation
PRO-CHINA SLOGANS: Two DPP members criticized police officers’ lack of action at the scene, saying that law enforcement authorities should investigate the incident Chinese tourists allegedly interrupted a protest in Taipei on Tuesday held by Hong Kongers, knocked down several flags and shouted: “Taiwan and Hong Kong belong to China.” Hong Kong democracy activists were holding a demonstration as Tuesday was China’s National Day. A video posted online by civic group Hong Kong Outlanders shows a couple, who are allegedly Chinese, during the demonstration. “Today is China’s National Day, and I won’t allow the displaying of these flags,” the male yells in the video before pushing some demonstrators and knocking down a few flagpoles. Radio Free Asia reported that some of the demonstrators
An aviation jacket patch showing a Formosan black bear punching Winnie the Pooh has become popular overseas, including at an aviation festival held by the Japan Air Self-Defense Force at the Ashiya Airbase yesterday. The patch was designed last year by Taiwanese designer Hsu Fu-yu (徐福佑), who said that it was inspired by Taiwan’s countermeasures against frequent Chinese military aircraft incursions. The badge shows a Formosan black bear holding a Republic of China flag as it punches Winnie the Pooh — a reference to Chinese President Xi Jinping (習近平) — who is dressed in red and is holding a honey pot with
