The Ministry of Foreign Affairs yesterday released a promotional video outlining Taiwan’s contributions to global issues and its implementation of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals as part of the nation’s efforts to join the global body.
The ministry said it hopes to solicit support from the international community for Taiwan’s bid to join the UN ahead of the 78th session of its General Assembly, which is to begin on Tuesday next week in New York.
Taiwan stands shoulder to shoulder with UN nations and is a model and reliable partner in fulfilling the Sustainable Development Goals, the ministry said.

The video, titled “To Equality,” tells five stories that echo the UN goals and the theme of the upcoming session — “Rebuilding trust and reigniting global solidarity: Accelerating action on the 2030 Agenda and its Sustainable Development Goals towards peace, prosperity, progress and sustainability for all,” it said.
On providing quality education, the video documents an Amis school in Hualien County that is helping indigenous children to connect with the world.
For five consecutive years, Taiwan has ranked first in Asia for gender equality, and is led by a female president, while more than half of the nation’s mayors and commissioners, as well as more than 40 percent of legislators are women, the video shows.
On health and well-being, National Taiwan University Hospital’s Yunlin Branch provides telemedicine services to people in rural areas, it says.
As part of an effort to meet the UN’s goal of “zero hunger,” farmers in Taitung County’s Chihshang Township (池上) use blockchain technology to ensure the traceability and security of rice crops, it says.
Taiwan’s International Cooperation and Development Fund has been working on projects to help developing countries improve education, healthcare, agriculture and digitalization, which lives up to its “partnership for the goals,” the video says.
The video highlights the freedoms in Taiwan and demonstrates its dedication to fulfilling the UN’s goals and promoting the global body’s vision of sustainable development around the world through international cooperation programs, the ministry said.
It called on the UN to recognize Taiwan’s value as a partner and include the nation in its system.
The ministry released the video in Mandarin and English on its YouTube channel “Trending Taiwan” and is to provide subtitles in Arabic, French, German, Indonesian, Japanese, Portuguese, Spanish, Thai, Ukrainian and Vietnamese.
US President Donald Trump said "it’s up to" Chinese President Xi Jinping (習近平) what China does on Taiwan, but that he would be "very unhappy" with a change in the "status quo," the New York Times said in an interview published yesterday. Xi "considers it to be a part of China, and that’s up to him what he’s going to be doing," Trump told the newspaper on Wednesday. "But I’ve expressed to him that I would be very unhappy if he did that, and I don’t think he’ll do that," he added. "I hope he doesn’t do that." Trump made the comments in

A cold surge advisory was today issued for 18 cities and counties across Taiwan, with temperatures of below 10°C forecast during the day and into tonight, the Central Weather Administration (CWA) said. New Taipei City, Taipei, Taoyuan and Hsinchu, Miaoli and Yilan counties are expected to experience sustained temperatures of 10°C or lower, the CWA said. Temperatures are likely to temporarily drop below 10°C in most other areas, except Taitung, Pingtung, Penghu and Lienchiang (Matsu) counties, CWA data showed. The cold weather is being caused by a strong continental cold air mass, combined with radiative cooling, a process in which heat escapes from
Snow this morning fell on Alishan for the first time in seven years, as a strong continental cold air mass sent temperatures plunging across Taiwan, the Central Weather Administration (CWA) said. The Alishan weather station, located at an elevation of about 2,200m in central Taiwan, recorded snowfall from 8:55am to 9:15am, when the temperature dropped to about 1°C, the CWA said. With increased moisture and low temperatures in the high-altitude Alishan area, the conditions were favorable for snow, CWA forecaster Tsai Yi-chi (蔡伊其) said. The last time snow fell at the Alishan weather station was on Jan. 10, 2018, while graupel fell there
