Sanitation workers in Nantou earlier this month successfully retrieved NT$300,000 worth of jewelry from a landfill after five hours of searching.
Shift supervisor Hsieh Sheng-chih (謝升祉) yesterday said that a man around 30 years old came into the office at about 7:30am on July 10 looking distraught.
He told Hsieh that the day before, he accidentally threw away a bag of gold and diamond jewelry that he had purchased when he got married while cleaning out a closet.

The man said he had hidden the valuables among his clothing to keep them safe, but forgot they were there while cleaning.
That evening he realized what had happened, and fearing it would be combusted, went to sanitation first thing the next morning to see if they could help, Hsieh said.
The workers first asked the man to remember which truck he tossed the bag into so they could ask the driver where he or she emptied the truck the evening before on Nantou City’s 40,000 tonne “trash mountain,” he said.

They then dug in the area by hand and with an excavator for the entire morning without luck, Hsieh said.
Then, “just as he was losing hope,” a worker discovered a trash bag that fit the description and discovered the jewelry bag inside, he added.
Nantou Mayor Chang Chia-tse (張嘉哲) hailed the sanitation workers for their perseverance and dedication.
He also advised the public to report accidentally discarded items as soon as possible with detailed information on what was lost, when and where.
Taiwan is to have nine extended holidays next year, led by a nine-day Lunar New Year break, the Cabinet announced yesterday. The nine-day Lunar New Year holiday next year matches the length of this year’s holiday, which featured six extended holidays. The increase in extended holidays is due to the Act on the Implementation of Commemorative and Festival Holidays (紀念日及節日實施條例), which was passed early last month with support from the opposition Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) and Taiwan People’s Party. Under the new act, the day before Lunar New Year’s Eve is also a national holiday, and Labor Day would no longer be limited
COMMITMENTS: The company had a relatively low renewable ratio at 56 percent and did not have any goal to achieve 100 percent renewable energy, the report said Pegatron Corp ranked the lowest among five major final assembly suppliers in progressing toward Apple Inc’s commitment to be 100 percent carbon neutral by 2030, a Greenpeace East Asia report said yesterday. While Apple has set the goal of using 100 percent renewable energy across its entire business, supply chain and product lifecycle by 2030, carbon emissions from electronics manufacturing are rising globally due to increased energy consumption, it said. Given that carbon emissions from its supply chain accounted for more than half of its total emissions last year, Greenpeace East Asia evaluated the green transition performance of Apple’s five largest final
