A woman and her boyfriend were sentenced to life in prison after being found guilty of murdering the woman’s father, who allegedly refused to give them more money to fund university and living expenses in the US, the Taichung District Court said yesterday.
The woman, surnamed Chiang (江), 34, and her boyfriend, surnamed Chang (張), 35, killed the father with repeated blows to the head with a hammer in December 2021, the court said.
The couple wrapped the corpse in a large plastic bag and transported it via scooter to a rural hilly area of Taichung, prosecutors said.

“The defendants used cruel means to kill Chiang’s father, lacked compassion for the man and displayed ingratitude to the father who raised [Chiang] and gave the couple a lot of financial support,” prosecutors said in the indictment last year, requesting a heavy punishment.
The judges imposed a life term for Chiang and Chang after finding them guilty of murder and abandonment of a corpse.
The ruling can be appealed.
Chiang had relied on her father’s financial support for living and tuition fees while studying for a master’s degree in the US.
The father, 57, was a school security guard who lived frugally and used a substantial portion of his savings to finance Chiang and her boyfriend’s studies in the US for seven years before they returned to Taiwan in 2020, investigators said.
The couple blamed the father for “reneging on an agreement of financial support,” they said.
The loss of financing resulted in them having to return to Taiwan, testimonies showed.
They got angry when the father refused to give them more money, and they often quarreled about it after returning to Taiwan, which led to the plan to kill him, investigators said.
