Police on Tuesday arrested a man returning from Singapore at Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport for allegedly robbing a lottery store before fleeing the country.
The Taichung City Police Department’s Fourth Precinct said a lottery store on Yungchun E Road in Taichung’s Nantun District (南屯) reported a robbery on Monday.
A man dressed in black and wearing a fully covered helmet had rushed into the shop as it was closing in the early hours of the morning, a shopkeeper said.

The clerk panicked and ran out of the store, the person said, adding that the robber had taken NT$200,000 from the cashier before leaving in the direction of Wurih District (烏日).
Police said they had cordoned off the area, and a forensics team had been dispatched to gather evidence.
CCTV footage showed the suspect traveling toward the Wurih Taichung High Speed Rail Station, police said, adding that they later found an abandoned vehicle near the station.
Footage from surveillance cameras along the road showed that the suspect, alleged to be a man surnamed Hung (洪), arrived at the railway station at about 9pm on Sunday, police said.
After the robbery, the suspect changed his clothes and traveled directly to the Taoyuan airport, police said, adding that records showed that Hung left for Singapore later that night.
Police said that they identified him as a former professional roller skater, and it is likely that he committed the theft to cover gambling debts, adding that they found NT$32,000 and S$8,000 (US$6,051) in his possession when he was arrested.
Taiwan is to have nine extended holidays next year, led by a nine-day Lunar New Year break, the Cabinet announced yesterday. The nine-day Lunar New Year holiday next year matches the length of this year’s holiday, which featured six extended holidays. The increase in extended holidays is due to the Act on the Implementation of Commemorative and Festival Holidays (紀念日及節日實施條例), which was passed early last month with support from the opposition Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) and Taiwan People’s Party. Under the new act, the day before Lunar New Year’s Eve is also a national holiday, and Labor Day would no longer be limited

While Apple has set the goal of using 100 percent renewable energy across its entire business, supply chain and product lifecycle by 2030, carbon emissions from electronics manufacturing are rising globally due to increased energy consumption, it said. Given that carbon emissions from its supply chain accounted for more than half of its total emissions last year, Greenpeace East Asia evaluated the green transition performance of Apple’s five largest final
