Police kill sickle attacker
Police on Friday fatally shot a man after he allegedly attacked his nephew with a sickle in Kaohsiung. The Kaohsiung City Police Department’s Gangshan Precinct dispatched two officers at about 8pm after receiving a report that an altercation had broken out at a residential building, reportedly over an estate dispute. At the scene, the officers found a man surnamed Tsai (蔡), 64, who was visibly aggravated and approaching his 43-year-old nephew with a sickle, police said. They ordered Tsai to drop the sickle, but he refused and tried to attack his nephew, prompting the officers to fire 15 shots, targeting his lower body, police said. One of the bullets hit his abdomen, one hit his armpit and three hit his legs, police said. Tsai died after emergency treatment at a hospital. Witnesses said that Tsai had tried to swing at his nephew’s head. After viewing footage from the officers’ body cameras, the precinct said that they had used their firearms appropriately to save a civilian from immediate life-threatening danger.

FDA recalls diabetes drug
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has recalled 390,000 Kludone MR 60mg tablets. Manufacturer Anxo Pharmaceutical Co had initiated the recall on batch numbers 210379 and 210380 after regular dissolution testing showed that samples from the batches dissolved at a rate that did not meet specifications, potentially affecting the medication’s efficacy, the FDA said. Anxo Pharmaceutical Co voluntarily reported the issue to the FDA, the agency said, adding that the recall would run through Feb. 13. Kludone MR is a brand name for gliclazide, a medication used to treat type-2 diabetes by increasing the amount of insulin produced by the pancreas.
