Taiwan yesterday reported 16,571 new COVID-19 cases, including 57 imported infections, and 59 deaths from the disease, the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) said.
The deceased ranged in age from their 50s to their 90s, and they all had underlying health issues, while 29 were unvaccinated against COVID-19, the center said.
The CECC also reported 82 new cases classified as moderate and 56 as severe.
The severe cases include two young girls who were diagnosed with multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children, it said.
One is a three-year-old who does not have any underlying health conditions and had received one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, while the other is an unvaccinated five-year-old who tested positive for COVID-19 on Oct. 13 and subsequently developed a fever, and a rash on the torso and lower limbs, the CECC said.
The two remained hospitalized in ordinary wards, it added.
The number of new domestic cases reported yesterday was 13.9 percent lower than a week earlier, the center said.
New Taipei City reported the most new cases, with 2,679, followed by Taichung with 2,219 and Kaohsiung with 2,184, it said.
Taoyuan reported 1,695 cases, Tainan 1,632, Taipei 1,464, Changhua County 800, Pingtung County 553, Hsinchu County 491, Yunlin County 423, Hsinchu City 406 and Miaoli County 375, the center said.
Chiayi County had 296 cases, Nantou County 294, Yilan County 243, Keelung 213, Chiayi City 182, Hualien County 174, Taitung County 108, Kinmen County 47, Penghu County 33 and Lienchiang County 3, the CECC said.
To date, Taiwan has recorded 8,146,790 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began in early 2020, including 37,218 classified as imported.
With the 59 deaths reported yesterday, the total number of confirmed COVID-19 fatalities in the country rose to 13,907.
