The number of flights from Taiwan to Japan has surged, with the weekly figure totaling 727 this month, up by more than 40 percent from a year earlier, according to the Civil Aeronautics Administration.
The number of weekly flights operated by 15 aviation companies saw a sharp increase from the 508 operated by 13 airlines in May last year, administration statistics showed.
Most of the flights were bound for Tokyo and Osaka, which totaled 256 and 179 per week respectively.
The growth in the number of flights coupled with a weaker yen has pushed down ticket prices.
Prices for the Taipei-Tokyo route fell by about 20 percent compared with the 2012 level.
For example, the cheapest round-trip ticket for a China Airlines or an EVA Air flight from Taipei to Tokyo next month costs less than NT$10,000.
One-way ticket prices offered by budget airline V Air are about NT$2,000.
Although the market has yielded less profit for aviation companies operating flights to and from Japan, they are still planning to open more new routes to Japan.
