President-elect Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) yesterday visited Gorilla Technology on her nationwide industry tour in the hope that the company’s success in networking could provide a future path for the development of the nation’s creative industries.
Tsai told the Internet of Things (IoT) Alliance in Taipei that while Taiwan excels in the manufacturing of components, networking, or system integrations and creative applications, are the obvious next steps, adding that integrating different systems and assisting information use is a key industrial sector as the world enters the IoT era.
Gorilla Technology has done well, proving itself capable of expanding and retaining its client base as a company offering networking services, Tsai said, adding that she hoped to take something from the firm’s experiences and apply it to the growth of the concept in Taiwan.

Gorilla Technology specializes in IoT, a concept that seeks to connect everyday physical objects to the Internet. Actual application of the concept can be seen in the development and use of quick response codes, radio frequency identification tags and Bluetooth technology.
The IoT concept possesses the unique characteristic of being able to negotiate across platforms and industries, which might form an advantage for Taiwan to develop relevant technologies due to Taiwan’s strong base in information and communication technologies, Tsai said, adding that the quick response time of Taiwan’s small and medium-sized enterprises is also a plus factor.
By reinforcing the nation’s software, as well as hardware-software integration, Taiwan has the potential of becoming the most important innovative base in the world, Tsai said.
The government in the digital age must be ready for a new mindset and be willing to slowly adapt and change regulations from the industrial age to the new era, she said.
In the face of rapidly fluctuating economic activity in the 21st century, not only should the role of the government be redefined, but industrial policies should also be approached with a new mindset, Tsai added, stressing that the government must be able to lead the new industries and spearhead innovation, in other words, it must maximize the nation’s innovative energies.
Industrial policies should also look to increase overall technological expertise for both corporations and workers aside from focusing on traditional indices, such as production and export values, Tsai said.
While Tsai emphasized that the IoT concept is the direction of future technological development, she also said that the basic elements of the concept are everywhere in our daily lives.
Education, passports, transportation and other areas would all benefit from the applied use of such technologies, Tsai said, adding that once different areas are networked together, it would not only raise the quality of people’s lifestyles, but also build a firm base for the increased development of the concept.
Tsai concluded her presentation by stating that the IoT concept is a new technological culture, one that has a creative basis to meet the people’s actual needs, adding that it is also based on the spirit of sharing, as opposed to corporations monopolizing the economy.

The Central Weather Administration (CWA) said a magnitude 4.9 earthquake that struck off the coast of eastern Taiwan yesterday was an independent event and part of a stress-adjustment process. The earthquake occurred at 4:47pm, with its epicenter at sea about 45.4km south of Yilan County Hall at a depth of 5.9km, the CWA said. The quake's intensity, which gauges the actual effects of a temblor, was highest in several townships in Yilan and neighboring Hualien County, where it measured 4 on Taiwan's seven-tier intensity scale, the CWA said.
