The Central Weather Bureau (CWB) yesterday said that it did not issue a warning that radioactive clouds generated by hydrogen bomb testing in North Korea would soon float over Taiwan, adding people are advised to verify the authenticity of information whenever they are in doubt.
The bureau made the announcement after receiving multiple telephone calls from concerned people.
Callers said that they received messages online or through the bureau’s text-messaging app that hydrogen bomb testing in North Korea had generated radioactive clouds, which were forecast to cover Taipei today, the bureau said.
The message told people to carry an umbrella, wear hats, surgical masks and clothes with long sleeves when they are outside and remember to thoroughly clean themselves when they returned home, the bureau said.
The bureau denied sending the message.
The Atomic Energy Council said radiation levels in Taiwan have been normal since North Korea claimed it tested a hydrogen bomb on Wednesday last week.
The council said it would instantly publicize changes to radiation levels on its Web site at www.trmc.aec.gov.tw.
The bureau said that it always announces weather forecasts through public or private media outlets, adding that each announcement clearly states that the information is from the bureau.

The Tainan District Court has found a teenager guilty of posting a sexually explicit video of his girlfriend on social media without consent.
