A man who yesterday shot himself dead near the Fo Guang Shan Buddha Memorial Center in Kaohsiung was later confirmed by police as the main suspect in a shooting murder earlier this week.
Yang Ying-chan (楊英展), 32, allegedly shot the couple in front of their house in Chiayi on Wednesday. The wife, surnamed Lu (呂), was wounded while her husband, surnamed Chen (陳), was killed.
The crime was recorded on a closed-circuit TV camera.
Local media reports quoted police as saying that Lu’s elder sister met Yang in May and the two became a couple. However, after moving in with Yang in September, Lu’s elder sister accused Yang of domestic violence and wanted to break up, police said, adding that when the two had an argument on Monday, Lu and Chen attempted to mediate between the two, but were unsuccessful, with Yang allegedly threatening to harm his girlfriend’s family.
Police said that prior to Wednesday’s shooting, Lu’s elder sister had moved into Lu’s residence.
As well as finding Yang’s identification card on his person, police said they found a letter which contained phrases such as: “Because of your arrogance, two people’s lives are gone.”

A firefighter yesterday died after falling into New Taipei City's Xindian River when a rescue dinghy capsized during a search mission for a man who was later found dead. The New Taipei City Fire Department said that it received a report at 4:12pm that a 50-year-old man, surnamed Chen (陳), had fallen into the river.
