London-based Taiwanese fashion designer Chen Shao-yen (陳劭彥) on Friday unveiled his autumn and winter collection at London Fashion Week, his 10th showing at the event.
Chen said his latest collection was inspired by the twisted body shapes and the stark expressive lines of paintings by Austrian artist Egon Schiele, who used bold colors such as red, yellow and black to express emotion.
The collection incorporates design elements aimed at highlighting the lines and curves of the human body, Chen said.

Presented under the theme “Flesh,” the collection features 20 designs that build on Chen’s signature combination of sporty and artistic creations. More than half of the designs showcase his expertise in working with knitwear.
Through different techniques, Chen’s designs incorporate surreal depictions of human anatomical parts such as muscles, the ribcage and blood vessels.
Chen collaborated with up-and-coming Taiwanese sculptor Chou Shih-hsiung (周世雄) to present the collection as an installation and performance art display. The models moved and posed among Chou’s black sculptures, which seemed to come alive at intervals.
The designer said that type of presentation gave the audience more time to see the details of his work and to enjoy the sights and sounds of the performance.
Chen, who has boutiques in Taiwan and Beijing, said he hopes to take his womenswear label to fashion week events in New York and other European cities.
Chen, who earned a master’s degree from Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London, launched his “Shao Yen” label in September 2010.
He gained recognition through projects such as the SHOWstudio Punk film series, Selfridges London’s “Bright Young Things” young talent initiatives and exhibitions at Lane Crawford Beijing and the National Palace Museum in Taipei.
