In order to collect funds to erect a new building, the Canaan Disability Home in Neipu Township (內埔), Pingtung County, has started selling popsicles, but since most of the children in the home are unable to work with numbers, the institution has implemented an honor system through which customers pay for the popsicles by putting the correct amount of money into a box at the selling booth.
Kuo Wen-chu (郭文珠), a secretary at the disability home, said the idea to collect funds through selling popsicles has been successful, as more than 200 have been sold in the past week.
Kuo thanked those who bought popsicles and lauded them for their charity, since most of them put more money into the box than the popsicles were being sold for, even though the children who attended the booth cannot check if the correct amount is being paid.
She added that they also had a customer who bought 10 popsicles for the children in the home.
A customer surnamed Pan (潘), who bought two popsicles, said that eating popsicles is a must in summer and it is even better that he could help the home while enjoying the treats.
“It would be immoral to be dishonest when paying,” Pan said.
Kuo said the idea of selling popsicles came from the experience of an elderly man in the facility surnamed Lin (林), who needed an artificial limb, but did not have money to pay for it. The home at the time helped him to raise funds through selling popsicles and they are hoping to repeat their success.
AGING: While Japan has 22 submarines, Taiwan only operates four, two of which were commissioned by the US in 1945 and 1946, and transferred to Taiwan in 1973 Taiwan would need at least 12 submarines to reach modern fleet capabilities, CSBC Corp, Taiwan chairman Chen Cheng-hung (陳政宏) said in an interview broadcast on Friday, citing a US assessment. CSBC is testing the nation’s first indigenous defense submarine, the Hai Kun (海鯤, Narwhal), which is scheduled to be delivered to the navy next month or in July. The Hai Kun has completed torpedo-firing tests and is scheduled to undergo overnight sea trials, Chen said on an SET TV military affairs program. Taiwan would require at least 12 submarines to establish a modern submarine force after assessing the nation’s operational environment and defense

The coast guard today said that it had disrupted "illegal" operations by a Chinese research ship in waters close to the nation and driven it away, part of what Taipei sees a provocative pattern of China's stepped up maritime activities. The coast guard said that it on Thursday last week detected the Chinese ship Tongji (同濟號), which was commissioned only last year, 29 nautical miles (54km) southeast of the southern tip of Taiwan, although just outside restricted waters. The ship was observed lowering ropes into the water, suspected to be the deployment of scientific instruments for "illegal" survey operations, and the coast

The case would be handled in accordance with public indecency charges, it added.
