A 19-year-old Changhua County resident was sentenced to almost 72 years in prison by the Changhua District Court on Wednesday for having a sexual relationship with a girl that began when she was 13.
Despite handing the teenage boy, surnamed Lin (林), 71 years and 10 months in jail, the court ruled that he would only have to serve three years in jail and five years of probation.
According to the ruling, Lin met the girl in April 2011 and they started going out. The girl began staying at Lin’s place overnight and eventually moved in with him.
The ruling said that between April 2011 and March last year, when the girl turned 14, the couple had sex about 46 times. They then reportedly had sex on 17 more occasions from March to June last year, the court said.
The police became involved after the girl’s mother reported her as missing when she failed to come home.
The police tracked the girl to Lin’s home, where she was living at the time.
The Changhua County Prosecutors’ Office indicted Lin for offenses against sexual autonomy.
During the trial, the couple insisted they were in love and vowed to remain together as they were questioned by the court.
Lin also told the girl’s mother that he would take good care of her daughter.
The mother told the court that she was willing to forgive Lin and was not seeking financial damages from him. She also asked the court to show him leniency.
In the ruling, the court convicted Lin of having sex with the girl on 63 occasions.
For each of the 46 times they supposedly had sex when the girl was under the age of 14, Lin was sentenced to one-and-a-half years, but the court said he should only serve two years in prison.
For each of the 17 times they allegedly had sex after the girl turned 14, Lin was sentenced to two months, with the court ruling that he should serve a total of one year for this.
The court said it was willing to reduce Lin’s punishment given that he and the girl were in a close relationship and the girl’s mother had forgiven him.
