People who plan to travel to the Middle East must take precautions against a potentially deadly virus as more cases have been reported, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) said yesterday.
Travelers are advised to pay attention to personal hygiene, as well as to avoid visiting farmland and coming into contact with camels or people with symptoms of respiratory distress, it said.
According to the WHO, 264 cases of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) have been confirmed as of early this month, including 93 deaths, mainly in the Middle East.
There have also been increasing cases confirmed in other countries, including the US, Malaysia, the Philippines and Greece, suggesting a pandemic surge, the CDC said.
In Taiwan, a total of seven suspected MERS-CoV cases have been found since last September, but all of them have tested negative, according to the CDC.
Taiwan issued a level-2 travel alert for Jilin Province in China on Friday after the northeastern province reported a new human infection of H7N9 avian flu.
The patient remains in severe condition, according to the CDC.

A pro-Russia hacker group has launched a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack on the Taiwanese government in retaliation for President William Lai’s (賴清德) comments suggesting that China should have a territorial dispute with Russia, an information security company said today.
