A popular 1967 Taiwanese martial arts movie, which was digitally restored last year, is to be screened at this year’s Cannes Film Festival in France, the Taipei Film Commission said.
Dragon Gate Inn (龍門客棧) will be shown in the Cannes Classics section, which features films from the past, the commission said.
The Chinese Taipei Film Archive spent NT$4 million (US$132,560) to digitally restore the movie, which was a box office hit in Taiwan in 1967 and ushered in a wave of martial arts films in the country over the next decade, the commission said.
The movie is about a group of people trying to protect the children of a general, who was condemned to death by a eunuch.
The restoration of Dragon Gate Inn should remind the public of the importance of preserving films, said Chung Kuo-hua (鍾國華), a section chief at the Chinese Taipei Film Archive.
Other Taiwanese films that are to be screened at the festival include Wang Hsi-chieh’s (王希捷) The Rowboat (划船) and Lee Yi-shan’s (李宜珊) Spring Breeze (春風), which will both be presented in the Short Film Corner.
Twenty-three film companies from Taiwan will attend this year’s Cannes Film Festival to promote and sell their productions, including the crime drama Black and White 2 (痞子英雄), the commission said.
The movie’s producer, Yu Hsiao-hui (于小惠), said she hoped to sell the film rights at the festival so that the movie can be shown in countries such as Singapore and Malaysia.
A Taiwan movie night will be held on Saturday next week at Carlton Beach in Cannes, and international filmmakers and media are expected to attend, the commission said.
The festival will run from Wednesday to May 25.
