The Criminal Investigation Bureau yesterday urged users of the popular free messaging service Line to heed a new mobile phone scamming technique that involves dialing a telephone number starting with “0809” in an effort to use their identities to create fraudulent accounts at online auction sites.
The bureau said it had recently received multiple reports of such a scam, which involved Line messages claiming to be from the intended victims’ friends, saying they had just got a new cellphone number — which always reads “0809031088” — and asking them to dial the number to test whether its connection was working.
“The number is in fact used by a local online auction site to validate the cellphone numbers of people wishing to apply for an account. Once they dial the number, their numbers would be instantly verified,” the bureau said, adding that “The con artists would then be able to register accounts in their names without them knowing.”
