The eponymous timepiece in college student Hung Shih-chieh’s (洪士傑) short film Watch (懷錶) witnesses how the world changes over time. The film has been named Best Foreign Language Animation at the 2013 International Student Film Festival Hollywood.
Hung, a National Taiwan University of Science and Technology student, was not present to receive the award in person at the event in Los Angeles on Sunday.
The seven-minute computer animated feature (www.dt.ntust.edu.tw/content/watch) centers on an antique pocket watch as it travels between different owners, examining the passage of time, questioning whether it is people that collect antiques or the antiques that collect people.
In an interview on Monday with Radio Taiwan International, Hung said that an object is given value by its owner’s attachment to it.
“I address the importance of the watch by telling a story of three generations passing the object down. The [story] covers family links, the idea of time and people’s feelings toward an object,” Hung said.
Three other Taiwanese films were nominated for Best Foreign Language Drama: Practice (親愛練習) and After the Storm (魚在水裡哭), both from Kun Shan University of Technology, and Taste of Home (泰式鄉味) from the National Taiwan University of Arts.
Aspiring filmmakers from 14 countries saw 74 films nominated to the final round of the student film festival, now in its 11th year.
The festival took place on Oct. 26 and Oct. 27 in North Hollywood.

The first bluefin tuna of the season, brought to shore in Pingtung County and weighing 190kg, was yesterday auctioned for NT$10,600 (US$333.5) per kilogram, setting a record high for the local market.
