Twenty-two large figurines are currently on display at Chiayi County’s Suantou Sugar Factory which the county government has hailed as capturing the essence of what it means to be “people of Chiayi.”
According to Chiayi County Commissioner Helen Chang (張花冠), half of the residents in Chiayi County are farmers and the county government sought to interpret the essence of what it means to be a resident of Chiayi through art.

Artists involved in the exposition have used various artistic techniques, such as painting and sculpting, on large figurines in an effort to capture the spirit of Chiayi residents, she added.
The exhibit opened on Thursday and is slated to last for one-and-half-months.
Among the displays are a figurine of rocker Wu Bai (伍佰) and veteran singer Yeh Chi-tien (葉啟田), both Chiayi County natives.
Saying the figurines are like the “terracotta warriors” of Chiayi County, participating artists invited everyone to visit and take a look at the figurines, which they say “embody our interpretation of what it means to be a resident of Chiayi.”
The county government added that people who have uploaded or sent back photos of themselves with the figurines to the event organizer’s Web site or to the event organizer would be able to participate in a raffle.
