Families of mothers need to be educated about breastfeeding for the practice to gain wider acceptance in the country, the Bureau of Health Promotion said yesterday at an international conference that was held to promote breastfeeding.
“The mothers of mothers are the problems,” Bureau of Health Promotion Director-General Chiou Shu-ti (邱淑媞) told the Asia-Pacific Conference on Baby-Friendly Hospital and Breastfeeding Program.
“Are you sure you have enough milk?” and “Aren’t you afraid that your baby will starve to death?” were some of the questions mothers of newborns often face from their relatives, Chiou said.
Randa Jarudi Saadeh, a senior scientist with the WHO, urged mothers to breastfeed within hours after labor and continue doing so extensively for the following six months.
Citing studies, Saadeh said breast milk can improve an infant’s vision, independence and parental trust, and decrease the chances of catching infectious diseases.
Babies who are not breast-fed are also 22 percent more likely to become overweight or obese, she said.

Taiwan-Japan Travel Passes are available for use on public transit networks in the two countries, Taoyuan Metro Corp said yesterday, adding that discounts of up to 7 percent are available. A pro-Russia hacker group has launched a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack on the Taiwanese government in retaliation for President William Lai’s (賴清德) comments suggesting that China should have a territorial dispute with Russia, an information security company said today. The hacker group, NoName057, recently launched an HTTPs flood attack called “DDoSia” targeting Taiwanese government and financial units, Radware told the Liberty Times (sister paper of the Taipei Times).
