Former president Lee Teng-hui (李登輝) will remain in hospital until the middle of this month because he has not yet recovered from colon cancer surgery, Lee’s office said yesterday.
It was earlier said that Lee would be discharged sometime between tomorrow and Friday, but a spokesperson said he was still in pain, had not been sleeping well and had a constant fever.
However, the 88-year-old former president has been calm since surgery on Tuesday to remove a cancerous tumor in his colon, the office said in a statement.
Lee was diagnosed with colon adenocarcinoma, the most common form of colorectal cancer, during a regular physical -examination at the Taipei Veterans’ General Hospital on Monday. He had surgery the next day to remove the tumor, which was estimated at 3.5cm by 2.5cm in size.
Post-surgery examinations have shown that he is healing normal and shows no signs of infection, his office said.
However, Lee is still unable to eat, although he can drink a little water, the office said.
Moreover, the former president cannot stand for any length of time because he has pleural effusion, which is causing the fever.
Lee is undergoing post-surgery therapy which has been adjusted to take into account chronic diseases, including high blood pressure, diabetes and heart disease, the office said.
