The Tourism Bureau yesterday said that it would extend the execution of the hotel ratings program for another year after receiving positive responses from hoteliers nationwide.
The ratings program was launched two years ago in a bid to raise the quality of hotel services. Each hotel is rated on its infrastructure and the service quality by the Taiwan Assessment and Evaluation Association, an independent agency not affiliated with the bureau.
To attract hotels to the program when it was first launched, the bureau said that participating hotels would be rated for free, with the bureau picking up the tab.
Those filing the applications between this month and Aug. 31 next year would still be evaluated for free, the bureau said.
Yesterday, the bureau announced 19 more hotels that have received star ratings, including five that were given two stars, five that received three stars and nine that merited five stars.
Among those winning five-star status were the Grand Victoria Hotel in Taipei, Tempus Hotel Taichung, Hotel One Taichung and Promised Land Resort and Lagoon in Hualien.
Yung Tai Hotel in Penghu County was given a three-star rating, which was the highest rating that has been given to a facility on the islands.
The Kaohsiung Hotel and AM Motel, which have been around for decades, each received two stars after renovating their facilities and improving their services.
Yang Yeong-sheng (楊永盛), director of the hotel inspection and supervision center, said 182 hotels have applied to be rated since the program began and 77 acquired star ratings.
Thirty-five applicants are still under evaluation.
