Visitors to Greater Kaohsiung will get a taste of this year’s Lantern Festival as early as next week, city officials said yesterday.
Tourism Bureau Director--General Chen Sheng-shan (陳盛山) told a press conference in Kaohsiung that the main lantern for this year — specially designed to mark the Year of the Rabbit — will be lit next Friday, as a prelude to the lantern festival, which will be held from Feb. 12 to Feb. 28.
Chen said the city government also plans to set off 500m of fireworks in the harbor area to mark the the official start of the festival.
The 13-minute display will -involve 11,168 fireworks in conjunction with a water dance, followed by a performance from local pop group Mayday, Chen said.
Another display will be held over Agongdian River (阿公店溪) to celebrate last month’s merger of Kaohsiung City and county.
In addition to the display at the opening ceremony, a smaller -fireworks show will also be held on Love River every day during lantern festival, Chen said.
Greater Kaohsiung Mayor Chen Chu (陳菊), who held the press conference, said last year’s Kaohsiung Lantern Festival attracted up to 8.03 million visitors, adding that she hopes to surpass that number by as much as 1 million.
Hong Kong singer Eason Chan’s (陳奕迅) concerts in Kaohsiung this weekend have been postponed after he was diagnosed with Covid-19 this morning, the organizer said today. Taiwanese indie band Sunset Rollercoaster and South Korean outfit Hyukoh collectively received the most nominations at this year’s Golden Melody Awards, earning a total of seven nods from the jury on Wednesday. Premier Cho Jung-tai (卓榮泰) on Friday laid out the Cabinet’s updated policy agenda and recapped the government’s achievements ahead of the one-year anniversary of President William Lai’s (賴清德) inauguration.
