A total of 176 taxi stands will be set up throughout the greater Taipei area by the end of March in an effort to reduce carbon emissions and improve passenger safety, according to the Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MOTC).
With the additional taxi stands, fewer taxis will have to cruise the streets looking for passengers and wasting gasoline while doing so, the ministry said.
The taxi stands will also be in well-lit areas with security cameras — mainly in front of convenience stores — which will improve safety for passengers, the ministry said, adding that passengers will also be able to request a taxi at the stores.
The ministry said it will ask the Taipei City and Taipei County governments to design signs for the taxi stands and help find suitable stores with around-the-clock video surveillance and bright lights.
Taipei city and county are the first to take part in the program, since they have the most taxi drivers, the ministry said, adding that other cities and counties will also be invited to take part in the -program if it proves effective.
The ministry said it will also encourage taxi operators to add more taxi pickup points to reduce the taxi vacancy rate.
According to the ministry, Taipei City currently has seven pickup points that are able to accommodate 189 taxis, with some having monitoring equipment and security staff. As for Taipei County, it currently has seven service points with 24 parking spaces.
Taipei city and county have a total of 54,000 registered taxis, accounting for about 62 percent of the 88,000 taxis in the country.
