About 40 percent of different brands of mosquito lamps sold on the market do not meet product safety standards, a survey by the Bureau of Standards, Metrology and Inspection showed yesterday.
Mosquito lamps that attract insects and then electrocute them are one of the most popular devices used by households to deal with the increasing number of pests that accompany the arrival of summer.
SAFETY STANDARDS
However, they can also be a fire hazard if certain parts of the device do not meet product safety standards.
The bureau recently conducted tests on 15 brands of mosquito lamps that are available on the market and found six that were sub-standard and recommended they be taken off the shelves.
The six brands of faulty mosquito lamps were manufactured by Tong Ming (東銘電機), Ampletech (安寶科技), Sunhow (上豪家電), Yeou Chyng (友情家電), Yen Sun (元山科技) and Tai-Yen (臺榮實業). They are widely sold at large supermarkets and retail chains that specialize in electrical products.
The mosquito lamps that did not pass the test mainly had low flame resistance or problematic insulation devices, bureau deputy director-general Huang Lai-ho (黃來和) said, adding that sparks may fly when a mosquito is electrocuted.
If the device does not have a proper safety mechanism to prevent sparks from causing the lamp to catch fire, it could start a fire, he said. The bureau has ordered recalls of the faulty products and told manufacturers to make improvements.
HUMIDITY
The bureau also reminded those who use mosquito lamps to keep the appliance away from flammable substances such as gas outlets. Mosquito lamps should also not be kept in humid places to avoid a short in the electrical circuit.
