More than 70 percent of high school and university students who were surveyed about aesthetics were unable to name even one prominent local artist, the King Car Education Foundation said yesterday.
In a survey gauging awareness of, interest in and participation in aesthetics-related activities, 70.85 percent of respondents could not think of one name when asked to name “three well-known Taiwanese artists.”
Of those who did come up with one or more artists, the most commonly named people were Cloud Gate Dance Theatre founder Lin Hwai-min (林懷民), sculptor Ju Ming (朱銘), painter Shiy De-jinn (席德進), poet-painter Hsi Mu-rong (席慕容), painter-anthropologist Max Liu (劉其偉) and painter Jimmy Liao (幾米), foundation general director Joyce Tseng (曾清芸) said.
Nearly half of respondents (45.69 percent) took part in less than one art or cultural event per week. Another 37.97 percent said they attended at least one event a week, while 16.19 percent said they were involved in related activities almost every day.
Tropical depression TD22, which was over waters south of the Ryukyu Islands, is likely to develop into a tropical storm by this morning and pose a significant threat to Taiwan next week, the Central Weather Administration (CWA) said yesterday. Typhoon Krathon, a military airshow and rehearsals for Double Ten National Day celebrations might disrupt flights at Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport in the first 10 days of next month, the airport’s operator said yesterday.
