President Ma Ying-jeou (馬英九) has expressed the wish that his discretionary fund can be used to pay for the travel expenses of vegetable vendor Chen Shu-chu (陳樹菊), who left for New York yesterday to receive an award as one of Time magazine’s 100 most influential people in the world, the Presidential Office said yesterday.
Presidential Office Spokesman Lo Chih-chiang (羅智強) said the government would have no problem paying Chen’s travel expenses and that the president would be willing to use his “state affairs fund” if necessary.
Regarding who would eventually pick up the bill, Lo said it was not a concern for the president at the moment, adding that Ma wanted to make sure that Chen obtained the proper assistance in a speedy manner so she could go to the US to receive the award.
Chen was ranked eighth in the “heroes” category of this year’s Time 100 list. The magazine said Chen had donated nearly NT$10 million (US$318,600) to various causes.
