Acting Minister of Justice Huang Shih-ming (黃世銘), who was nominated by President Ma Ying-jeou (馬英九) to serve as state prosecutor-general, is likely to win the support he needs during a legislative vote on his nomination tomorrow.
Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) Legislator Lu Hsueh-chang (呂學樟), who heads the party’s task force reviewing the nomination, told reporters at the legislature that the task force would urge members of the caucus during a meeting today to support Huang’s nomination during the upcoming vote.
Lu said that given his competence, integrity and ideas on the execution of law and order, the task force concluded Huang would make a good state prosecutor-general.
By law, Huang must win a plurality of the 113-seat legislature — or 57 lawmakers — to become prosecutor-general.
The is expected to pass as the KMT caucus accounts for 75 seats, including one People First Party legislator.
Legislative Speaker Wang Jin-pyng (王金平) also previously expressed confidence that the KMT caucus would help push through Huang’s nomination as a key nominee put forward by the KMT administration.
Huang was nominated after former prosecutor-general Chen Tsung-ming (陳聰明) resigned following his impeachment by the Control Yuan in January.
The government watchdog voted 8-3 to impeach Chen, citing concerns over his “integrity” and “sincerity” when heading the Supreme Prosecutors’ Office Special Investigation Panel’s probe into alleged corruption involving the former first family.
Democratic Progressive Party Legislator Tsai Huang-liang (蔡煌瑯) said the caucus questioned Huang’s impartiality and his achievement in the area of judicial reform during his term as vice minister of justice since the KMT administration came to power.
