Central Election Commission (CEC) Secretary-General Teng Tien-yu (鄧天祐) yesterday said holding a referendum on the US beef agreement along with the local elections at the end of the year is an option, since holding the two votes together would cut some costs.
A campaign seeking a national referendum on whether US beef imports should be allowed passed a review by the Cabinet’s Referendum Screening Committee on Thursday.
The second phase will require the petitioners to obtain the endorsement of 5 percent, or 860,000, of the 17.32 million eligible voters in the last presidential election within six months. The referendum request would then be sent for a second review.
If the referendum request passes the second review, the vote is to be held within the next six months.
Teng said, however, that holding a referendum and the year-end elections together was only one of the options and the decision would be made collectively by the commission at the appropriate time as it is still unclear whether and when the referendum request would pass a second review.
The year-end local elections are the Taipei mayoral election, which will be held in early December along with elections for the four new special municipalities that will be created by upgrading Taipei County, merging Kaohsiung City with Kaohsiung County, merging Taichung City with Taichung County and merging Tainan City with Tainan County.
