Residents of the rural area of La Bourne, St Lucia, now have tap water, Taiwan's Ambassador to St Lucia Tom Chou (周台竹) said on Tuesday.
The tap water system was inaugurated during a ceremony presided over by St Lucia Prime Minister Stephenson King and attended by Chou, about 300 local residents and reporters on Saturday, Chou said in a telephone interview.
During the ceremony, King thanked Taiwan for its contribution to St Lucia's economic and social development, particularly its work in helping build the country's infrastructure.
The results prove that his country's decision to resume diplomatic relations with Taiwan in 2007 was correct, the prime minister was reported as saying.
A 70-year-old woman was quoted as saying that some 1,000 La Bourne residents had never used tap water before in their lives. Following old practices, they had collected rainwater or carried it from ponds, she said.
“With the water supply being so precious, we had to make every drop count,” the woman told Taiwanese embassy workers.
The Ministry of Education (MOE) is to launch a new program to encourage international students to stay in Taiwan and explore job opportunities here after graduation, Deputy Minister of Education Yeh Ping-cheng (葉丙成) said on Friday. The government would provide full scholarships for international students to further their studies for two years in Taiwan, so those who want to pursue a master’s degree can consider applying for the program, he said.
