The Taiwan Railway Administration (TRA) is offering travel deals for backpackers want to embark on around-the-island railway tours during the winter break.
The administration began offering similar packages for backpackers in July, when a three-day railway pass and one night at a youth hostel were available for NT$799.
BACK BY DEMAND
The TRA said the deals were well received by young people and that it had received requests for similar travel packages during the winter break.
The nation’s largest railway service will continue to offer three-day, five-day and seven-day railway tour packages.
In addition to a railway pass that allows backpackers to board any commuter trains or any Tzukuang-class express train (莒光號), the packages will also include a coupon for a one night stay in a youth hostel.
DETAILS
The tour packages cost NT$899, NT$1,099 and NT$1,299. Travelers can use them anytime between Jan. 1 and Feb. 28.
The TRA also changed the prerequisites for registering for the packages. Participants no longer need to find a travel companion to register for the railway tours.
In July, the administration only allowed travelers between 15 years old and 30 years old to sign up for the tours.
This time, anyone between 15 and 35 can purchase the packages.
CYCLING ROUTES
Meanwhile, the Tourism Bureau has recommended cycling routes for backpackers interested in pedaling their way to tourist attractions from various train stations.
The Chinese Taipei Youth Hostel Association started taking registrations for the packages at the International Travel Fair, which ends today.
For more information, visit the hostel association’s Web site at www.yh.org.tw or call (02) 2331-1102 or (02) 2331-2655.
Taiwan is to receive the first batch of Lockheed Martin F-16 Block 70 jets from the US late this month, a defense official said yesterday, after a year-long delay due to a logjam in US arms deliveries. Completing the NT$247.2 billion (US$7.69 billion) arms deal for 66 jets would make Taiwan the third nation in the world to receive factory-fresh advanced fighter jets of the same make and model, following Bahrain and Slovakia, the official said on condition of anonymity. F-16 Block 70/72 are newly manufactured F-16 jets built by Lockheed Martin to the standards of the F-16V upgrade package. Republic of China

A pro-Russia hacker group has launched a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack on the Taiwanese government in retaliation for President William Lai’s (賴清德) comments suggesting that China should have a territorial dispute with Russia, an information security company said today. The hacker group, NoName057, recently launched an HTTPs flood attack called “DDoSia” targeting Taiwanese government and financial units, Radware told the Liberty Times (sister paper of the Taipei Times). Local tax bureaus in New Taipei City, Keelung, Hsinchu and Taoyuan were mentioned by the hackers. Only the Hsinchu Local Tax Bureau site appeared to be down earlier in the day, but was back
