The Criminal Investigation Bureau (CIB) yesterday urged Yang Ching-hai (
"It seems to me that he is trying to convince the public that we have overreacted in dealing with this case. But do not forget, he is the suspect," said Kao Cheng-sheng (
Kao was referring to remarks Yang made at a press conference at the CIB yesterday morning.
"I believe we have enough evidence to ensure Yang will go to jail," Kao said.
Kao said that in order to make sure they had sufficient evidence, the police investigated Yang for seven months. They examined more than 8,000 vehicles and interviewed more than 4,000 people, he said.
Prosecutors yesterday appealed the Taiwan High Court's decision to release Yang on bail of NT$100,000, arguing that Yang is likely to repeat the offense.
Prosecutors said there was no reason for the court to believe Yang's statement that he felt regret about what he did.
Although police confiscated two guns from Yang, he did not disclose where he had purchased it and could obtain another one, they said.
Yang, a 58-year-old former Bureau of Investigation special agent, filed a slander suit against National Police Agency Director-General Hou You-yi (
Yang alleges that the CIB damaged his reputation by leaking information to the press.
"They should have adhered to the gag order," Yang said. "Blackmailing the president and his family members is wrong. I will apologize for that. But they should not have done what they did to me."
Yang was arrested on Tuesday for allegedly threatening the first family and government officials.
When police arrested him at his Taipei County home, they discovered pistols and bullets. He was charged with violating the Statute Regulating Firearms, Ammunition, Knives and Other Deadly Weapons (

Another wave of cold air would affect Taiwan starting from Friday and could evolve into a continental cold mass, the Central Weather Administration (CWA) said yesterday.
