The vice director of the National Security Bureau's Special Service Center has resigned after a series of security lapses.
The bureau confirmed yesterday that Lieutenant General Hsu Li-mang (許立孟) left his position on Saturday and that the vice commander of the Reserve Command, Lieutenant General Chang Kan-ping (張戡平), has taken over.
Chinese-language newspapers reported that Hsu had tendered his resignation to take responsibility for a series of incidents in which members of the public heckling President Chen Shui-bian (
The newspapers said Hsu had also taken responsibility for the incidents during last year's Double Ten National Day celebrations.
Several Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) and People First Party (PFP) legislators attempted to disrupt Chen's speech at that event by chanting "A-bian step down," and holding banners that read "Depose Chen."
Hsu was also blamed for the manhandling of a protester during Lunar New Year celebrations.
Taiwan is to receive the first batch of Lockheed Martin F-16 Block 70 jets from the US late this month, a defense official said yesterday, after a year-long delay due to a logjam in US arms deliveries. Taiwan-Japan Travel Passes are available for use on public transit networks in the two countries, Taoyuan Metro Corp said yesterday, adding that discounts of up to 7 percent are available. A pro-Russia hacker group has launched a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack on the Taiwanese government in retaliation for President William Lai’s (賴清德) comments suggesting that China should have a territorial dispute with Russia, an information security company said today. The hacker group, NoName057, recently launched an HTTPs flood attack called “DDoSia” targeting Taiwanese government and financial units, Radware told the Liberty Times (sister paper of the Taipei Times).
