The Homemakers Union and Foundation (HUF) yesterday celebrated its 20th birthday with a ceremony using environmental protection as its theme.
Founded in 1987 by people, mostly women, who wished to contribute to the community, the HUF has four committees focusing on environmental protection, education, women's health and growth, and consumer protection.
Its Environmental Protection Committee has since hosted numerous campaigns on issues such as recycling, garbage reduction, packaging minimization and shoppers bringing their own shopping bags.
Commending the women's long-term contributions to environmental protection as well as other causes, Vice President Annette Lu (呂秀蓮), who was invited to give a keynote speech, urged the foundation to continue conserving Taiwan's environment for future generations.
"Live to be younger," Lu urged. "Women with longevity usually live simple lives. Recycling, conserving, saving energy, and reducing pollution are keys to maintaining humankind."
Environmental Protection Agency Deputy Minister Chang Feng-teng (張豐藤) also attended, lauding the group's contributions and said that his agency would continue to work with HUF as well as other environmental groups.

Outside the auditorium, foundation volunteers showcased recycled products including soaps, letterheads, and organic cockroach poison.
"We made the soap out of recycled frying oil, and organic cockroach poison out of onions," HUF's Environmental Protection Committee chief Frances Shyu (
"We want to inform the public that it is easy to recycle and conserve," she said.

The Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) caucus yesterday said it opposes the introduction of migrant workers from India until a mechanism is in place to prevent workers from absconding. Minister of Labor Hung Sun-han (洪申翰) on Thursday told the Legislative Yuan that the first group of migrant workers from India could be introduced as early as this year, as part of a government program.
