The Taichung International Travel Fair, which runs through tomorrow, has succeeded in attracting tens of thousands of visitors during the first two days of the exhibition, organizers said yesterday.
Visitors to the fair include large numbers of bargain hunters searching for discount tour package deals offered by the 265 exhibitors from Taiwan and abroad, Taichung City Government officials said.
Taichung is holding the annual exhibition in conjunction with the Tourism Bureau.
Exhibitors
Exhibitors at the fair this year include the central government and city and county governments, as well as foreign and domestic hotels, theme parks, travel agencies, tourism organizations and travel magazines.
The first 500 visitors to the show each day have received gifts including airline tickets, hotel vouchers, coupons for discounts, vouchers for health spas and souvenirs.
Many tour operators at the exhibition are offering package deals at drastically reduced prices, including a NT$1,999 package for three nights at one of 89 hotels in Taiwan, China and the Philippines.
Malaysia, which has set a goal of increasing its number of tourist arrivals to 20 million this year, is represented at the exhibition by the Malaysia Tourism Promotion Board.
Malaysian tours
The board is offering three tours, each of five days, within Malaysia, starting from NT$9,999.
As part of the fair's activities, the organizers have invited troupes from Russia, Ukraine, France, Ghana and Malaysia to stage various performances each day.
The Taichung International Travel Fair has become a major annual event in central Taiwan since it was first held in the city in 2000.
Last year's exhibition drew more than 70,000 visitors, up 12.5 percent over 2005, the organizers' figures showed.

While CGA vessels were dispatched to expel the Chinese boats, Chinese coast guard ships trespassed into Taiwan’s restricted waters and unsuccessfully attempted to interfere, the CGA said. Due to the provocation, the CGA initiated an operation to increase
