A Taiwanese delegation consisting of representatives from 21 fishery companies is in the US to take part in an international seafood fair.
The delegation, headed by the secretary general of the Taiwan Frozen Seafood Industries Association, will set up a Taiwanese exhibition pavilion at this year's Boston International Seafood Fair to provide a platform to enhance exchanges between the fishing industries of the two countries, with the hope of expanding the nation's tilapia markets in North America, a delegation spokesman said.
The spokesman quoted tallies released by US Customs showing that last year the nation was the fifth-largest supplier of tilapia to the US and tilapia was the nation's most competitive aquacultural export item.
The figures showed that last year the nation exported 45,000 tonnes of aquacultural products to the US, worth US$117.6 million, of which tilapia accounted for US$36.54 million, frozen dolphin for US$24.55 million and squid for US$17.17 million.
A delegation member said that the growing US market for aquacultural products, especially for tilapia, was good news for Taiwanese fishing enterprises attending the trade show.
Thanks to last year's success, the number of participating Taiwanese fishing companies has significantly increased and now counts 21.
The Taiwan External Trade Development Council also sent personnel to arrange exhibitions at a Taiwanese pavilion to promote Taiwan's farm and fishery products, food, food processing equipment, food packaging machines as well as other information on foreign trade.

The US-Japan joint statement released on Friday not mentioning the “one China” policy might be a sign that US President Donald Trump intends to decouple US-China relations from Taiwan, a Taiwanese academic said. Following Trump’s meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba on Friday, the US and Japan issued a joint statement where they reaffirmed the importance of peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait and support for Taiwan’s meaningful participation in international organizations. Trump has not personally brought up the “one China” policy in more than a year, National Taiwan University Department of Political Science Associate Professor Chen Shih-min (陳世民)
