Police have arrested a truck driver who allegedly molested nearly 200 teenage girls by posing as a model company scout and offering them jobs, the Chinese-language China Times said yesterday. The suspect, surnamed Chen, 43, was arrested on Wednesday when he was trying to approach a teenager he had allegedly molested two months before. The girl alerted police, who arrested Cheng, the daily said. Police said they found 193 pieces of paper in Cheng's bag, each bearing the name and telephone number of a teenager he had allegedly abused. Cheng reportedly told police that he had a sexual impulse whenever he saw large-chested women. He reportedly began to recruit "models" three years ago. Police said he forced the girls to pose naked for photos and touched many of them.
Tropical Storm Nari is not a threat to Taiwan, based on its positioning and trajectory, the Central Weather Administration (CWA) said yesterday. Nari has strengthened from a tropical depression that was positioned south of Japan, it said. The eye of the storm is about 2,100km east of Taipei, with a north-northeast trajectory moving toward the eastern seaboard of Japan, CWA data showed. Based on its current path, the storm would not affect Taiwan, the agency said.
The Taipei Department of Health’s latest inspection of fresh fruit and vegetables sold in local markets revealed a 25 percent failure rate, with most contraventions involving excessive pesticide residues, while two durians were also found to contain heavy metal cadmium at levels exceeding safety limits.
