Rice labeled incorrectly
Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Legislator Lin Shu-shan (林樹山) said yesterday that the fact that some rice labeled as domestic has actually been mixed with between 15 percent and 30 percent imported rice. Lin claimed that consumers are usually kept in the dark and think they have bought locally grown rice. Most of the labeling on the rice packaging is in small characters, which Liu said should be increased for easy reading. Wang Chang-ying (王長瑩), an official with the Agriculture and Food Agency under the Council of Agriculture, said that since Taiwan joined the WTO in January 2002, it is required to import around 140,000 tonnes of unpolished rice every year. Wang said that in line with food management regulations, rice must be marked with its quality specification, weight, production and preservation date, name of the manufacturers and their telephone number and address. If manufacturers fail to adhere to the regulations, they will be notified to make improvements and if they fail to do so, will face fines of between NT$15,000 and NT$60,000, she said.
Taiwan yesterday condemned the recent increase in Chinese coast guard-escorted fishing vessels operating illegally in waters around the Pratas Islands (Dongsha Islands, 東沙群島) in the South China Sea. Unusually large groupings of Chinese fishing vessels began to appear around the islands on Feb. 15, when at least six motherships and 29 smaller boats were sighted, the Coast Guard Administration (CGA) said in a news release. The Shanlan Express (山嵐號), or “Mountain Mist Express,” is scheduled to launch on April 19 as part of the centennial celebration of the inauguration of the Taitung Line.
