The "Hunger 30" drive sponsored by World Vision Taiwan is looking for 7,000 more young people to help promote this year's fundraising activity. Hunger 30 is in its 17th year of operation. During the activity, people experience for themselves how it feels to go without food for 30 consecutive hours. At the end, participants donate to World Vision the money saved from the food they would otherwise have consumed over the fast. World Vision Taiwan is looking for men and women aged between 18 and 30 to help promote this year's activity, which is scheduled to start in May, followed by a "Hunger Train" and a "Hunger Convention" in August, said a World Vision official in charge of publicity. More people should take part in Hunger 30 so that they can realize the preciousness of life and become more willing to contribute to global humanitarian efforts, said a volunteer who took part in last year's event.
Taiwan yesterday condemned the recent increase in Chinese coast guard-escorted fishing vessels operating illegally in waters around the Pratas Islands (Dongsha Islands, 東沙群島) in the South China Sea. Unusually large groupings of Chinese fishing vessels began to appear around the islands on Feb. 15, when at least six motherships and 29 smaller boats were sighted, the Coast Guard Administration (CGA) said in a news release. The Shanlan Express (山嵐號), or “Mountain Mist Express,” is scheduled to launch on April 19 as part of the centennial celebration of the inauguration of the Taitung Line.
