Despite a slight decrease in average incomes, cash donations hit an all-time high last year, the United Way of Taiwan (UWT) reported yesterday. Average income last year recorded negative growth of 0.9 percent compared with 2004, marking the largest decline over the past four decades, UWT officials said, quoting tallies from the Directorate General of Budget, Accounting and Statistics. However, the charity raised NT$250 million (US$7.69 million) through fund-raisers around the nation last year, officials said, marking a record high and nearly 30 percent growth from the amount raised in 2004. The charity said it raised NT$153.43 million in 2002, rising to NT$173 million in 2003, NT$190 million in 2004 and NT$250 million last year. With the donation amount increasing gradually over the years, the number of cash donations has also grown, from 57 posted in 1993 to 435 last year, marking a growth of 6.6 times, the charity said.
Japanese footwear brand Onitsuka Tiger today issued a public apology and said it has suspended an employee amid allegations that the staff member discriminated against a Vietnamese customer at its Taipei 101 store. US President Donald Trump said "it’s up to" Chinese President Xi Jinping (習近平) what China does on Taiwan, but that he would be "very unhappy" with a change in the "status quo," the New York Times said in an interview published yesterday. Tourism in Kenting fell to a historic low for the second consecutive year last year, impacting hotels and other local businesses that rely on a steady stream of domestic tourists, the latest data showed. A cold surge advisory was today issued for 18 cities and counties across Taiwan, with temperatures of below 10°C forecast during the day and into tonight, the Central Weather Administration (CWA) said.
