The foundation said it was privately owned and therefore exempt from a law requiring the military to give up shareholdings in the local media business.
The MND made the request to comply with the government's campaign to remove governmental, military and political influences from local media businesses.
MND officials yesterday said the Liming Foundation was founded by the ministry and is therefore subject to its supervision. It said the foundation was established in 1972 by the ministry using funds from donations to several of the ministry's subsidiaries
The foundation should give up its shareholdings in Chinese Television System, amounting to 25 percent of the firm's total shares, MND officials said yesterday.
If the foundation refuses to give up its shares, the MND said it might consider filing a lawsuit against it to seek a solution.

Taiwan yesterday condemned the recent increase in Chinese coast guard-escorted fishing vessels operating illegally in waters around the Pratas Islands (Dongsha Islands, 東沙群島) in the South China Sea.
