Choosing members of the proposed national communications commission based on the number of seats each party has in the legislature would lead to political interference in the group's operations and hurt press freedom, the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) caucus said yesterday.
DPP caucus whip William Lai (賴清德) said the proposed committee is supposed to be a watchdog for consumers whose interests must be protected by a good system.

He said it would be ridiculous to seek press freedom with a national communications commission staffed by political appointees.
Seven TV channels lost their licenses this week after a GIO committee review of all channels, including an all-news channel owned by the Eastern Multimedia Group. The move renewed calls for an early establishment of a communications commission.
