The ministry said earlier that Chen would visit two diplomatic allies in the Caribbean. He departed on May 15 for visits to Saint Kitts and Nevis and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, making a stopover in New York. The minister is scheduled to make a transit stop in Los Angeles on his way home.
Lu said Costa Rican President Abel Pacheco and Minister of Foreign Relations Roberto Tovar Faja have hosted dinners in Chen's honor during his stay.
The foreign minister's activities in Costa Rica were arranged through official consultations, Lu said, adding that wire agency reports that Chen's visit was "accidental" are not true.
Chen and his entourage are scheduled to return today, Lu said.
According to reports, Chen donated US$1.5 million to help St. Kitts and Nevis revamp its sports facilities ahead of the 2007 Cricket World Cup. During Chen's three-day visit to St. Vincent and the Grenadines he met with Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves and donated vehicles to the police.
