Police yesterday made a breakthrough in the case of the assassination of police officer Hung Chung-nan (洪重男) in Huchien on April 10, and arrested two suspects who admitted to killing the policeman.
"Wang Bo-chung (王柏忠), 41, and his younger brother Wang Bo-ing (王柏英), 40, told police that they killed Hung and took his gun and bullets to use in a bank robbery," National Police Agency (NPA) Director-General Hsieh Ing-dan (謝銀黨) said yesterday.
"The two brothers told police that they hid the knives used to kill Hung as well as Hung's gun and bullets in the mountainous area around Huchien in Taipei County, and police are looking for those knives and weapons," he said.
Hsieh said there were blood stains on one of the Wang brothers' scooter. After a blood test, police confirmed that the blood belonged to Hung and another policeman, Chang Ta-hao (張大皞). Chang was seriously injured in the incident.
Police early yesterday morning raided the Wang brothers' home at Huchien, arrested them and found a scooter without a license plate in their garage.
Police also found more than 20 different kinds of knives on the premises.
According to the police, there was a shooting target, riddled with bullet marks, in an abandoned shelter 200m from the Wang's house.
Police said they are testing whether the holes in the target matched the bore of Hung's gun. If they matched, it would better consolidate the evidence.
Police officers said somebody living near the Wangs told police that he saw the Wang brothers testing a gun at the shelter.
Two days ago, a person also called the police and reported that he saw someone burning a coat with blood on it by the riverside. Police searched along the river and in the mountains around Huchien, and found a half-burned gray coat. Police finally identified the coat as likely belonging to the Wangs.
According to the police, the two suspects at first denied they committed the crime, but after police showed them some evidence yesterday afternoon, they admitted that they were guilty.
Policemen said the two brothers both had criminal records. They told the police that they were preparing to use the gun to rob a bank because they had financial problems.
Police said that the Wang brothers violently resisted the dismantling of their house by the local government several years ago. Wang Bo-ing allegedly threatened to set fire to a gas tank at the time.

MORE NEEDED: Recall drives against legislators in Miaoli’s two districts and Hsinchu’s second district were still a few thousand signatures short of the second-stage threshold Campaigners aiming to recall Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) legislators yesterday said they expect success in 30 out of 35 districts where drives have passed the second-stage threshold, which would mark a record number of recall votes held at once. Hsinchu County recall campaigners yesterday announced that they reached the second-stage threshold in the recall effort against Legislator Lin Szu-ming (林思銘). A total of 26,414 signatures have been gathered over the past two months, surpassing the 10 percent threshold of 23,287 in Hsinchu County’s second electoral district, chief campaigner Hsieh Ting-ting (謝婷婷) said. “Our target is to gather an additional 1,500 signatures to reach
