Heavy rains are forecast across the nation today and residents in mountainous areas should be alert to landslides, mudflows and lightning strikes in the afternoon, the Central Weather Bureau said yesterday.
Unstable weather returned yesterday, with the bureau issuing a heavy rain warning for the south of the country. Sudden storms early yesterday morning brought 140mm of rain to mountainous areas in Pingtung County.
Meanwhile, in Kaohsiung City, a record 104mm was recorded in Tsoying. In nearby urban areas such as Fengshan and Kangshan townships in Kaohsiung County, about 50mm of rain was registered.
In Taipei, afternoon thundershowers yesterday resulted in a 37-minute closure of Sung-shan Airport. By 3pm, a total of 67mm had been measured in Yangmingshan.
The bureau issued another heavy rain warning yesterday afternoon, saying that residents in mountainous areas should remain on the lookout for torrential downpours.
"A heavy rain warning means that 130mm or more of rain may accumulate within 24 hours," bureau meteorologist Tang Shuen-lan (湯舜然) said.
The western part of the country would also be affected by heavy rain, Tang said.
Forecasters said that the unstable conditions would continue through next week.
The bureau said people living in areas hit hard by Tropical Storm Mindulle on July 2 should remain alert to the possibility of heavy rain, Tang said.
In addition to torrential rain, officials warned the public to be alert to high UV levels. Yesterday, very high readings were measured in Miaoli County, Kaohsiung City and Pingtung County.
Forecasters said that today's daytime temperatures would climb above 34 degrees Celsius around the country.

COLD FACTS: ‘Snow skin’ mooncakes, made with a glutinous rice skin and kept at a low temperature, have relatively few calories compared with other mooncakes Traditional mooncakes are a typical treat for many Taiwanese in the lead-up to the Mid-Autumn Festival, but a Taipei-based dietitian has urged people not to eat more than one per day and not to have them every day due to their high fat and calorie content. As mooncakes contain a lot of oil and sugar, they can have negative health effects on older people and those with diabetes, said Lai Yu-han (賴俞含), a dietitian at Taipei Hospital of the Ministry of Health and Welfare. “The maximum you can have is one mooncake a day, and do not eat them every day,” Lai
