Premier Yu Shyi-kun yesterday announced the government will appropriate NT$100 billion to help the Taiwan Railway Administration revive itself in view of the completion of the Taiwan High-Speed Railway in 2005.
"The Taiwan Railway must revive and transform itself in order to accommodate the operation of the Taiwan High-Speed Railway," Yu told reporters while making an inspection tour of Ilan County yesterday.
Saying that it is of natural trend for the 115-year-old state-owned railway enterprise to transform itself along with the completion of the Taiwan High-Speed Railway, Yu said that the Executive Yuan had already listed the transformation of the administration as its priority
Yu added that it is the Cabinet's hope that the project would help solve unemployment as well as upgrade the development of the industry.
Yu said the budget needed to regenerate the administration would come from the Cabinet's proposed NT$500 billion budget, which is earmarked for the expansion of public construction projects over the next five years.
